A very extensive set of murals tells the Thai version of the "Ramayana," the ancient Hindu epic of Rama's battles with demons. Here is one of the monstrous demons which probably required supernatural assistance to overcome. This "Ramakien" story is of immense significance to Thai royalty. It was partially written by the king who named himself "Rama I" after the story's hero. All subsequent Thai kings have followed his example and when we were there the king was "Rama IX."
